V60 mastery

The cone rewards a steady hand — 5 min

5 min readThe percolation family

The V60 is three design decisions: a 60-degree cone, one large hole, and spiral ribs. The ribs hold the paper off the wall so air can escape and the filter never vacuum-seals; the hole is big enough that the plastic never limits the flow. Which means the bed — your grind — and your pour set the pace entirely. Hario built a brewer with no training wheels, and that is exactly why it teaches so well.

Grind lives around 38–52 on the universal scale. Water for most roasts: hot — 92–96°C, hotter for light and dense.
